How to prepare your home for summer flooding
Your home is your largest investment and your refuge. If flooding is serious enough, it could make your home too dangerous to live in until it’s cleaned up and restored. Follow these tips to help prevent the chance of serious flooding in your home.
Install a sump pump
Sump pumps are a quick defense against flooding in your basement. If water begins to flood in, the sump pump will activate and suck the water out of your home and channel it into the sewer. You’ll still have to dry out the flooded area, but this ensures that there won’t be standing water in your basement.
Regrade your lawn
If you have a lawn that slopes down toward your home, then it’s directing the rainwater at your home. You can have a landscaping company regrade your lawn. They can make it so that the dirt near your home is the highest point and the lawn slopes down to the street. This isn’t going to stop every drop of water since it absorbs into dirt, but with heavy flooding it will direct most of the water away you’re your home.
Apply sealant to your walls
It’s frustrating to see water seeping in the cracks in your basement or ground floor. With a coat or two of clear sealant, you can close off these cracks without changing the appearance of your walls to help keep water out of your home.
Keep some distance between mulch and your home
It looks nice when mulch goes right up to your home and creates a clean line for your flower bed. However, wet mulch can speed up the deterioration process of your siding. Leave a few inches of space between the mulch and your home, and your siding will stand up stronger to flooding.
